HWA International School successfully celebrated Literacy Week 2025 from November 17 to 21, bringing together students from both the Marina City Campus and the One-North Campus for a meaningful week dedicated to reading, writing, and creative expression. In line with the IB philosophy of fostering inquiry, communication, and intercultural understanding, the event encouraged students to explore literature in diverse forms while developing essential literacy skills.

The celebration began on November 13 with a Pre-Literacy Activity held at the Marina City Campus. During this session, MYP students were paired with PYP buddies for an interview and profile-building exercise. Under the guidance of Mr. Sam, students prepared interview questions, gathered information, and later transformed their findings into original storybooks. Each storybook included at least 500 words, a cover page, and two illustrations, giving students the opportunity to express themselves creatively while building meaningful connections across grade levels—an authentic demonstration of the IB Learner Profile attributes of being communicators and caring learners.

Throughout Literacy Week, students participated in a variety of classroom-based literacy activities. On November 17, the Marina City Campus launched the week with an opening programme featuring poem writing, literacy-themed Kahoot games, and storybook development sessions. From November 18 to 20, students from both the Marina City and One-North campuses took part in the Reading Challenge Bingo, an activity designed to broaden their reading experiences and encourage thoughtful engagement with different types of texts. Storybook writing continued throughout the week as students refined their narratives and illustrations with the support of their teachers.
One of the week’s highlights took place on November 20 at the Marina City Campus, where students participated in the much-loved Book Character Parade. Dressed as their favourite characters from picture books, novels, and classic tales, students filled the campus with colour and enthusiasm as they shared the stories that inspired their costumes.

Literacy Week concluded on November 21 with a series of performances celebrating students’ confidence and expressive abilities. Kindergarten to Grade 2 students presented a Readers’ Theatre showcase, Grades 4 to 6 performed choral readings, and MYP students read aloud the storybooks they had created. These performances provided students with opportunities to develop clear communication and confidence—skills aligned with the IB Learner Profile’s emphasis on nurturing thoughtful, articulate learners.
Literacy Week 2025 provided students with meaningful opportunities to collaborate, share their ideas, and experience the joy of storytelling. Through these activities, HWA International School continues to support students in developing strong literacy foundations and an appreciation for reading as a lifelong skill.
